A 60-year-old clearing agent, Idowu Adelusimi, who allegedly defrauded a medical doctor of N4.5 million, on Tuesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court in Lagos.
Adelusimi, who resides at No. 1, Erigbemi Atorise St., Ipaja Road, Lagos, is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences, stealing and forgery.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Innocent Odugbo, told the court that Adelusimi committed the offences in July and August, 2013, at 10a.m. at Victoria Garden City, Ajah, Lagos.
Odugbo said that the accused and others still at large conspired to commit the offences.
According to him, Adelusimi collected N4.5 million from Dr Olufunto Haseinde under the guise of using the money to clear four 40ft containers containing hospital equipment from the Tin-Can Island Port.
The prosecution alleged that the clearing agent forged a bill of lading in his name in order to clear the containers.
Odugbo told the court that the accused converted the money to his personal use and did not fulfill his business obligations to the doctor.
He submitted that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312, 363(1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The clearing agent, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Miss Mulikat Ali-Balogun, granted him bail in the sum of two million naira with two sureties in like sum.
Ali-Balogun adjourned the case till April 15 for mention.
