Hacking: Customs To Introduce Biometric Features in DTI

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said that it would introduce biometrics features to protect hacking into its Direct Traders Input (DTI) system.
Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Wale Adeniyi said that the biometrics features were meant to further secure the system.
He said that only the authorised officers would be allowed to have access into the DTI system.
DTI cafes are owned and operated by non-customs officers under the supervision of the service.

DTI cafes are owned and operated by non-customs officers under the supervision of the service.
The DTI system allows importers or agents to make declarations and payments online to reduce human contacts.
Adeniyi said that work had reached advance stage on the introduction of the biometrics system as the project had been tested in Abuja.
“ We have carried out tests to confirm the biometrics system and it will soon roll out in all the states.
“We have tested it in Abuja and it works. We are going to roll it out as soon as possible,’’ NAN quotes Adeniyi as saying.
He said that hacking was the major challenge the service was having with the DTI.
Adeniyi said that the Automated Systems of Customs Data (ASYCUDA) system was a robust and versatile system that allowed secured access for authorised operators.  
He said that the service had to secure its system further when officers complained of hacking the DTI, adding that the service would also do a lot with the ASYCUDA system.
The customs spokesman said that if the problem of hacking was not controlled, it could have implications for revenue generation.
He however, said that the service was yet to have any case of revenue leakage.
“We also had system audit which is controlled from Abuja.  It gives us secondary check if the first check fails, ’’ he said.
So far, I am not aware of any loss of revenue from there,” Adeniyi said.
The NCS said that it would bring DTI cafes under very close monitoring to check occurrence of identity fraud in the system.
Operators of the DTI cafes are to connect directly with the NCS computers to file entries electronically on imported goods.
The establishment of DTI cafes is one of the innovations of the current management of the NCS to block revenue leakages.
