Authorities of the Port of the City of Houston, Texas have entered an agreement with the National Port Authorities (NPA) to revamp various ports that were damaged over the period of civil crisis.
But part of the delegation from Houston who were here on an assessment of the ports are business people who expressed desire to bring more businesses to Liberia.
The delegation also visited the National Housing Authority (NHA), the Group of 77 disable community, and the business community for assessment.
The Houston Port will focus on four areas: capacity building, security framework, passenger transportation framework, and infrastructure development.
Speaking to journalists in Monrovia during a recent tour, the head of the team Larry V. Green said the visit had given them the opportunity "to assist what is needed at the port."
He said the Houston Port has had an agreement for technical and human resource assistance to the ports of Liberia.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the NPA Madam Maltida Parker said, "We are in desperate need of training. I cannot emphasize that any harder we are in desperate need for that at the moment."
In the area of security at the ports, she lauded the working relations with the City of Houston for the ports of Monrovia and Buchanan but urged the authorities of Houston to extend it to the ports of Greenville and Harper.
The NPA boss referred to passenger transportation as an 'area of major challenge' which she said comes with a huge security problem.
In the area of infrastructure, she said some of the ports across the country particularly the port of Harper needs to be laid out properly because with that the port will make a difference in the safety and the expansion of warehouse facilities.
She said as Liberia is growing and it is good for the country to get there very fast. "We really need to take a step back and do it well."
