Tugboat capsized in Bangkok, 2 missing
A tugboat towing barge capsized in Chao Phraya river in Bangkok, on Sep 29. Family crew of 2 are missing, search under way. Tug boat wasn’t identified, obviously she isn’t registered in intl registries or databases.
Filipino Chief Officer of Panamax bulker medevaced
Bulk carrier LYRIC POET reported sick Chief Officer in deteriorating condition with breathing/lungs issues, on Sep 27, and requested medical assistance. The ship was sailing at that time in Arabian sea, en route from Gibraltar to China (probably via Gibraltar from France). She interrupted voyage, changed course and headed for Kochi, India, after setting rendezvous with Indian CG and Navy rescue team. Chief Officer of Filipino nationality was airlifted by helicopter in the afternoon Sep 28 and transported to INHS Sanjivani, a multi-speciality hospital of the Indian Navy at Kochi, Kerala. Of course he is thought to be sick with covid, and of course, no details are given on his vaccination status. The ship resumed her voyage.
Maltese ro-ro capsized in Algiers Port, Algeria
Ro-ro cargo ship IVAN lost stability and capsized at Algiers Port, Algeria, on Sep 29 at around 0100 LT. The ship rested on bottom off pier, remaining partially above waterline and heavy starboard list. Reportedly, stability loss was caused by water ingress on cargo deck, which in its’ turn, was probably caused by faulty ballasting and ensuing list. 17 crew are safe, 6 of them, all Filipino), treated in hospital with slight injuries.
Car carrier CO2 leak killed 3, injured 2 crew
In the evening Sep 27, carbon dioxide leaked in engine room of a car carrier SANG SHIN, berthed at Changtu Shipyard terminal in Daishan, Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, China. Accident occurred reportedly, during firefighting system inspection, and was caused by crew erroneous procedures. 3 crew died and 2 are treated in hospital. The ship arrived at Ningbo-Zhoushan on Sep 18, from Jordan.
3 crew died in tanker explosion, China
Tanker HUA HONG 18 suffered explosion early in the morning Sep 26, in Yangtze river in Wuhu area. The ship arrived earlier, on Sep 25, and was moored in area designated for dangerous goods cargo operations. Three crew who were near explosion site carrying out their work, were badly injured and reportedly, died later, in hospital.
Bulk Carrier Nikolaos GS detained in Germany
Suffering from some major defects, the Bulk Carrier MV NIKOLAOS GS (IMO 9267170) has been detained in Lübeck, Germany for 20 days. During a regular Port State inspection, a total of 68 defects were identified on Nikolas GS including those on emergency exits, engine room insulation, fire doors, and fire dampers. Speaking to the local media, Christian Bubenzer from the ship safety department of BG Verkehr said that the number of defects was exceptionally high. He said that detention is the most appropriate action for vessels with such a long list of defects. Usually, vessels have few defects and companies rectify them before departure so that during follow-up inspections of Port State the deficiencies are cleared. But in the case of Nikolas GS, several follow-ups would be needed. Christian added that it is highly unusual for a shipping company to take as long as 20 days to rectify the defects.
